For thousands of years the Jews were discriminated against and used as a scapegoat for when something consequential happened. Similar to the Jewish community, those who are Muslim are being targeted and discriminated against. "Throughout the history of Islamic civilization, the idea of glorifying self-destruction to destroy others for whatever cause was scarce and rare," said the widely known Father of the American Muslim identity, Dr. Maher Hathout (Owen, Terror Is Not Islam). In today's society, there has been an alarming incline to anti-Islam feelings which accounts for the assumptions made by the community. It is essential for the public to be aware that the ones committing these inhumane crimes in the name of Islam are not to be defined as Muslims at all. Murder is strictly forbidden in the Qur'an, along with terrorism, enforcing of the religion, and the killing of innocent non-combatants (Owen, Terror Is Not Islam). However, terrorist organizations who act in the name of "Allah" such as Al-Qaeda, the Taliban, and ISIS are going against what the Qur'an is saying. Participants of these groups are not real Muslims and the American society must still learn to never associate the majority with the extremist minority.
There is a lack of awareness in the public media concerning the portrayal of the Islam faith when in relation to the attack on 9/11. Many are ignorant and do not realize that the faith should not be to blame for when it was an act committed by extremist "Muslims." Following the attacks of September 11, 2001, Muslims have been associated with terrorism and since then, only 27 percent of Americans have a favorable view of Muslim Americans (Wisniewski, American Opinion of Arabs, Muslims Is Getting Worse:Poll). Islamophobia is increasing daily if we do not become informed of the true values of the Islamic faith. In this year alone, the Boston Marathon bombing, the Boko Haram kidnappings of schoolgirls and now ISIS rampaging through Iraq and Syria have left a big impact on our nation and our perspective towards followers of Islam (Majeed, This Is What Islamophobia Feels Like to Me).
