Research Paper - Genetic Engineering

Almost every day we will see someone trying to raise money in order to feed the ones in need. Ending hunger is one of the main goals of the worldwide community and it is also one of the goals of genetic engineering. Even though genetically modified crops are the most famous form of genetic engineering in this sector, there are many other forms that are not only more productive, but also less controversial. [CITATION Chi03 p 4 l 1033 ]. For example, in the agricultural sector, researchers are trying to genetically modify insects so they would attack the predators of the crops, and therefore, defend them. If this is done, less pesticide would be used, hence, less chemicals would be exposed to the environments, and more importantly, the food eaten [CITATION Dai13 p 22 l 1033 ]. .
The use of pesticides in the crops has many dangers that affect not only the human being but also the ecosystem that it is spread in. For example, the chemicals used to make pesticides are toxic to the human body, so when someone eats food which contains pesticides, these chemicals are filtered by the liver, which has to recover from the intoxication that it suffered. In addition, pesticides spread quite easily, and even though they may be sprayed on the land, pesticides can make their way to a water source nearby. What this means is that the water can also be contaminated by them, and therefore, contaminate any organism that consumes that water too [CITATION Mit13 p 214-216 l 3082 ]. This does not apply to the human being as much because most of the water that we consume is purified and it goes through a decontamination process, however, animals, plants, and any other organism that lives in that ecosystem does not have the same luck as humans because the only source of water that they have is the one that was contaminated. Luckily, all these problems could be avoided by modifying the DNA of insects which will reduce the amount of pesticides used.
