Advantages and Disadvantages of Technology

Through reaching more diverse groups of people, more audiences are becoming more susceptible to the evolution of social changes. More children are getting smart phones at a younger ages and more grandparents are texting rather than calling. The constant improvements of technology have proven to us to respond to it in a give and take appeal.
Neil Postman is an American author, media theorist, and cultural critic who first illustrates a Greek story regarding King Thamus and an inventor Theuth. Through the Greek story it can be understood that new technology should be applied with a give and take approach. This type of appeal illustrates that it is perfectly okay to use technology, but it must be applied within moderate uses. Postman uses the term "Technophiles" when describing the people who are constantly looking forward to the newest and greatest thing. These types of people go on without any regards to the consequences of the overuse of these products and what it can do to society as a whole. Postman argues the consequences when he states, "On the other hand and in the long run, television may bring a gradual end to the careers of schoolteachers, since school was an invention of the printing press and must stand for the fall on the issue of how much importance the printed world was" (Postman 3). This type of consequence can happen everywhere, not just schools. One day, our children and grandchildren could be taught be robots and live in a world where playing outside was looked down upon. Another consequence of technology, such as smart phones, televisions, and computers, has combined our wisdom with our knowledge. In order to avoid such consequences, Postman suggests, "Our task is to understand what that design is-that is to say, when we admit a new technology to the culture, we must do with our eyes open" (Postman 2). Although this aspect can go against the norms of society, we cannot simply let technology completely change our way of living and thinking.
