Nutritional Foods and Tuberculosis

The consumption of unhealthy foods, together with mostly inactive jobs, has no doubt contributed to death rates in certain age groups. What has also been a major factor in the poor state of affairs in public health has been the carefree attitude many Papua New Guineans have to healthy living (The National, 2013). The lifestyles that people are now living are making them vulnerable to lifestyle diseases and Tuberculosis being one of them. A strong immune system keeps TB bacilli inactive and prevents TB bacilli from multiplying and developing TB infection into TB disease and from the way in which people are living especially in the urban areas they are at a high risk of developing TB. .
Betel nut has become a major problem in terms of the cleanliness of the cities around PNG, every public places that you go to there be betel nut husks and spit everywhere, in public markets and little street vendors it has become an eyesore. Betel nut is also a major contributing factor to the spreading of this TB disease, according to the President of the Medical Society of PNG Dr. Mathias Sapuri he said that the spitting of betel nut and the careless throwing of it's husks provides a perfect breeding place for the TB germ. The tiny invisible and moist sprays that are spread when a person spits from chewing betel nut can be a transition mode of tuberculosis when someone with TB chews and spits. Market TB is the most common TB that is spread among crowds and the tiny vapor can be carried more than 100 metres depending on the winds blowing. The NCD Health Director of Curative Health Dr. Jerry Tanumei clarified that the actual spitting of betel nut contributes to the spreading of TB and not the chewing with lime and also that not everyone can catch TB from spitting unless a chewer with active TB within the 100 metres radius chews and spits then those with low immunity can catch TB. .
The second aspect is now about how eating nutritional food can help to strengthen the immune system.
