Fransisco Coronado


             Francisco de Coronado was born in Spain in the year of 1510. He was a Spanish explorer of the American Southwest. In February 1540, Coronado set out from Mexico toward the north of the Rio Grand with an exploring party to find the "Seven Cities of Cibola." Francisco believed the stories he had heard that the cities were covered with gold. He believed he would find treasures such as gold and spices. Coronado set out with 1000 men riding splendid horses to search for the gold. Coronado explored for months, but he had only found poor Indian villages. Most of his men left him to go back to Mexico, but he decided to keep on looking. Francisco never found the cities of gold and his expedition was considered a failure. However, one of his groups found the Grand Canyon. They claimed it for Spain. They also claimed most of the land they discovered for Spain. In 1542, Coronado returned to Mexico after searching for months.
             Coronado was best known for exploring the southwestern part of the United States. He was also known for trying to find the "Seven Cities of Cibola". Although he never found the lost cities, he did discover what is now most of he southern United States.
             Francisco de Coronado had some great qualities. He was a very good explorer. He had sailed to Mexico with Viceroy Antonio Mendoza in 1538 and was made a governor of New Galicia. He was also very determined. He didn't give up when most of his group left to go back to Mexico after not being able to find the cities of gold. He continued to search. He was also nice to the Indians he had met, unlike other explorers. Francisco de Coronado is now considered as one of the greatest explorers. Coronado was married and had a family. .
             Francisco de Coronado died on September 22, 1542 of old age.
