Comparison of Psychoanalysis Theories

For example, Jung had a focus as to how personality was developed and how it would affect the behavior of a person. Jung is credited with developing the concept and theory of introvert and extrovert personality types. These two types of personalities show how a person will interact with others and their overall world. Adler, who was an actual student of Freud's, did not agree with Freud's views on how a child's personality developed. Adler was convinced that motivation within a child was the most important thing in the development of a child. Motivation was the force that drove the child to be able to overcome feeling inferior and at the same time, be able to develop positive feelings of worth. This contrasted with Freud, because he felt that the family relationship and the unconscious mind were what developed a child's personality. Horney was the one that developed the concept that neurosis was developed within a person as a means of being able to cope with things around them, to be able to cope with their environment and circumstances. Freud would have most likely said that the neurosis is derived from the unconscious mind, which cannot be controlled. Lastly, Erikson developed the theory that outside forces were what developed a person's personality. Where Freud believed that this only happened within childhood, Erikson believed that personality development happened continually throughout a person's lifetime. .
To compare the Neo-Freudian theorists to Freud himself, in regards to their theories, there are two main concepts that they tended to agree with Freud on. These were the concept of the unconscious mind of a person and the importance of personality development at the childhood age level. However, Freud's beliefs and theories were typically set within biological instances and settings. The Neo-Freudian theorists set out to expand on Freud's ideas by including other areas such as social, environmental and cultural factors that may indeed play a part in personality development.
