Dance Review - Bangarra Dance Company Theatre


            The Bangarra Dance Theater is an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organization founded in 1989 by African American arts administrator, Carole Johnson and is based at Walsh Bay in Sydney. The company is nationally applauded for its impressive and compelling dances. Bangarra's key objectives are to "Rekindle the links between traditional Indigenous cultures of Australia and to help better the lives of Indigenous Australians and tell their stories through superior, world-class dancing." Their program includes national and regional tours each year and an international tour to maintain their global reputation for excellence.
             Bangarra exists to create care and celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander's cultural life. Bangarra provides the opportunity for people of all cultural backgrounds to be able share knowledge about the world's oldest living culture. In just over two decades, Bangarra has produced over thirty original works and has also collaborated with other Australian performing arts companies such as the Australian Ballet and the Sydney Theatre Company. This Company consists of sixteen professionally trained artists who each obtain an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander heritage from different areas across Australia and one artistic director called Stephen Page; he was born in Brisbane and is a descendant of the "Nunukul" people from South East Queensland. Stephan was chosen to be Artistic Director of Bangarra in 1991 and ever since then he has built a powerful reputation for the company touring nationally and internationally, some of his most recognized works are; Skin ( 'Best New Australian Work' and 'Best Dance Work', 2001 Helpmann Awards), Bush ( 'Best Dance Work', 2004 Helpmann Awards), Mathinna ( 'Best Dance Work' and 'Best Choreography', 2009 Helpmann Awards) which have become milestones in Australian performing arts.
