Gretzky: An Autobiography

But it changes your lifestyle. Things most people take for granted there's no way I can do: grocery shopping, going to a mall, seeing a movie. I've tried to go to movies and mostly I spend the two hours signing autographs." (Gretzky, 106).
Everybody dreams of being "the best" at what they do, but nobody actually realizes how hard it is in terms of the "afterlife." No, I don't mean what actually happens after life, I mean what life is like after you retire. Wayne is a very humble guy and he realizes what it takes to get to the places you want to go. Wayne works very hard for what he gets and it pays off. When Gretzky was young he always dreamed of being the best and everybody would want his signature. Something changed as he matured and being a celebrity sunk in. He realized he couldn't do anything that normal people did. When I was at the "Gretzky Hockey School" this summer Wayne couldn't even go to the locker room to get out of his skates because of all the fans wanting his autograph. I do have to admit that I was one of those fans, hey, who can blame me he's the best hockey player of all time. That's the problem though he is the best and he is a celebrity so everybody is going to want his autograph. .
"Have you ever noticed that during the playoffs the number of fights goes down to about zero? And that's when our best hockey is played. If that isn't proof that we don't need fighting, I don't know what is. In the proposed Global Hockey League, fighting we be totally illegal. Figure this one out: You can accidentally high-stick a guy and get thrown out of the game, but two guys can stand there and beat each other dizzy and not be thrown out of the game. What sense does that make? In fact, they can stand there and beat each other to a pulp twice in a game and not be thrown out." (Gretzky, 209).
Wayne was a firm believer in a "no fighting rule" in the NHL. Most critics said that he was lobbying for this rule because 'he couldn't beat anyone in a fight.
