Good Looks Do Matter by Rita Panahi

Panahi then goes on to explain that, according to Dr W. Andrew Harrell, this unconscious favouring of good looking children could be linked to Darwin's theory of the "survival of the fittest", with parents wanting to protect the child that represents the best "genetic legacy". This link to an evolutionary, scientific reason for parents to favour children again reinforces the credibility of Panahi's arguments, making the audience think that this favouring is simply "human natural", even if it done unconsciously. Through using numerous factual evidence, allusions and a continual appeal to family values, Panahi has managed to effectively persuade the reader that parents show preferential treatment towards their more attractive offspring.
Rita Panahi argues that better looking people have a better education, and are therefore more intelligent. Due to the extra attention that "beautiful bubs" receive from their parents, they will have a higher average IQ than the "rest of the population". Panahi uses this statement to appeal to the family values of the audience, making parents feel a certain amount of responsibility for their children's academic success or failure. This seemingly "unfair" combination of both "beauty and brains" contradicts the general belief of a "himbo/bimbo stereotype", making the audience want to read further in order to hear Panahi's supporting arguments. Panahi does not disappoint, going on to reference a study of child development by the London School of Economics, which concluded that there is a physical attractiveness is "significantly positively" correlated with intelligence. Also, Panahi's specific references of attractive men scoring an IQ 13.6 points above average and good looking women scoring 11.4 above "the norm" helps to draw in both a male and female audience by making the information more relevant to the individual reader.
