The Criminality of Identity Theft


Identity theft is a serious problem that claims millions of innocent victims, unfortunately victims lose trust in businesses and even the law enforcement, and identity theft can also impact victims emotional. .
             What is identity theft?.
             "Identity theft is a crime in which an imposter obtains key pieces of personal information, such as social security numbers in order to impersonate someone else" (Kirk, D. 2014). In theory, this would leave their victims financially wounded after what they have built for their family and themselves. Now over the past years identity theft has increased throughout the world. The reason for this research is to learn from victims of identity theft on, what impact did it have on their life. I've chosen identity theft as my topic, because it is unlike an ordinary crime. Identity theft may seem harmless to most people because, No one becomes injured or killed in identity theft, also there is no threats, violence and no property is destroyed. Comparing identity theft to other crimes like sexual assault or murder, there are perceptions that these activities are harmless. Some may even say identity theft isn't a crime. I've interviewed four people for this research, the reason I chosen them for this is because they were victims of this heartless crime.
             In the year of 2009 there were 9.9 million victims of identity theft, which was an increase of 22 percent since 2007. Identity theft is an expensive and timing crime to recover from. Financial institutions and businesses report over 48 billion dollars lost and individuals nearly 5 billion all in one year. At this rate anyone can be a victim of identity theft.
