Utopia


(1) In April 1534 More refused to swear to the Act of Succession and the Oath of Supremacy, for this More was committed to the Tower of London. (1) Fifteen months after More was imprisoned, he was found guilty of treason, and beheaded on July, 6, 1535. His final words were "The King's good servant but God's first."(1) par.7) Thomas More was canonized on May 19, 1935 by the Catholic Church. (2).
             Utopia is a book that describes the island of Utopia and the rituals of the people who inhabit the island. The island of Utopia in the story as described by Raphael to More seems to be the perfect place to live. Utopia goes from one subject of the Utopian peoples lives to another and explains it in full detail. Every small detail about how the Utopian people live was well thought out. The Utopian way of life is so perfect they even have a society where money does not matter and everything is supplied for everyone that lives on the island (More p.67). Thomas More does an excellent job in writing Utopia, he combined the few positive aspects of our world with a well thought out fictional land and created the island of Utopia. .
             We As Americans have incorporated many factors into our society that the Utopian people used in their society. Even though the Utopian society is far superior to ours in many ways there are still many similarities.
             The Utopian people use a voting system to elect their Stywards and Mayors. When we elect our Mayors and other elected officials in our government, we basically use that same system. .

             When it comes down to the issue of God and religion, some of our religions here in America share many of the same beliefs as the Utopian people. For instance the Christian religion states that we will be rewarded or punished after we die depending on how we behaved when we were alive. The Utopian people also believe in one almighty god as the Christians do, but the Utopians call their God Mythras (More p.
