The Kite Runner and Lord of the Flies


The way of determination in Lord of the Flies and The Kite Runner can also be portrayed in different ways. In The Kite Runner, Amir tries to achieve different activities to get his father's acceptance. "I kept stealing glances at Baba sitting with Rahim Khan on the roof, wondered what he was thinking. Was he cheering for me? Or did a part of him enjoy watching me fail? That was the thing about kite flying: Your mind drifted with the kite" (Hosseini 63). Amir determined to win the kite game and by winning the kite game, Amir got his father's acceptance. In Lord of the Flies, Jack wants to kill a boar for food, "The spear moved forward inch by inch and the terrified squealing became a high-pitched scream. Then Jack found the throat and the hot blood spouted over his hand" (Golding 135). He spends his days and nights in the woods, trying to find a boar to kill. The way Amir looks for acceptance from his father, contradicts the way Jack hunts the boar. Amir longs for his father's acceptance, While Jack uses technique to get a boar. Their ways of determination are portrayed in different ways.
             Guilt is a big part of The Kite Runner and Lord of the Flies. Guilt is the feeling that a character gets when they feel inept. For example, Amir thought, "This was Hassan's final sacrifice for me. If he'd said no, Baba would have believed him because we all knew Hassan never lied. And if Baba believed him, then I'd be the accused" (Hosseini 105). Amir feels guilt because Hassan takes responsibility for stealing his gifts. In reality Amir framed Hassan and does not want to believe it is his fault that he is leaving. Comparing the guilt Amir shows to the guilt of Ralph after Simon's death duplicates the emotion behind them. Ralph has the guilt of knowing the boys killed Simon, "Ralph, cradling the conch, rocked himself to and fro. 'Don't you understand, Piggy? The things we did-.
