It was John Adams and other fellow Bostonians who called for the citizens to rise up and defend their liberty. To rally up this idea they took a couple notes from Algernon Sidney; Sidney stated that, "In a popular or mixed government the body of the people is the publick defense, and every man is arm'd and disciplin'd." What Sidney basically mentions in the quote is that we as American citizens are to be in charge of defending and protecting the public, but even though we are armed we must not forget that we must also have discipline. So in that time it was a common obligation for the citizens to possess guns because they were the only ones that were able to defend themselves. If they didn't do so then who would?.
In the debate of gun control there have been many terrors on American soil throughout the course of history that have implemented the idea in the minds of the American people that unless regulated under government supervision an armed man can do nothing but commit treachery and evil. Many of the so called uprising, or rebellions were quickly put down, but the idea of fear placed in the mind of the public has not faded. There 4 instances in which the public was effected by the brutal and aggressive rebels. At that time rebellions were sparked by the idea the by chance the new state governments were a potential threat to their liberty. The protests slowly began in the backcountry region of North and South Carolina. The protestors saw no wrong doing in their action, to the point that they began to call themselves "Regulators," because they felt that they were in charge of regulation of the remote settlement. These regulators would spark protests at a moment's notice and the United States government at times be delayed on attending to the riot, leaving farmers vulnerable to assault. So with the a distant government not being able to defend their citizens the farmers then would have to bear arms in order to protect themselves.
