Decriminalization of Cannabis in Virginia

It will save the state tons of money because of how much it costs to process and incarcerate someone for 30 days versus in New York where a 100 dollar fine is the equivalent.
             Another big question that arises when talking about this problem is why states decriminalize instead of legalize. Most of the time states take the more conservative route of decriminalization because of the fact that smoking weed doesn't do anything positive for its non-medical consumers (Thimmesch, 2013). Many states feel that legalizing marijuana completely would add to the already declining state of our country. It is known that more people would pick up the habit of smoking weed if it were in fact legalized. Most government officials believe that and to keep it illegal would stop all sorts of problems the effects of the drugs could have on our nation. Of the four states that have legalized marijuana they look past the effects that the drug can have on our society and look right to the money. Decriminalizing cannabis can save governments boatloads of money though reduction of processing and incarceration. It would free up millions of taxpayers' dollars to be focused on other avenues. Provided these other states are not worried about the money that's freed up they are focused on the profit in the legalization. The sale of marijuana in these states is a huge part of their local economy now and due to very heavy taxation the government is making tens of millions of dollars. So even though it is clear that marijuana will have an effect on the citizens, it is discarded due to the fact of how much money can be made of cannabis' sale. .
             Virginia is one of the most important states in America when it comes to government, due to its proximity to the nation's capital and that is one of the original 13 colonies. It needs to decriminalize marijuana not only for its own people, but to be part of the first states to do it and set an example for the rest of the country.
