Foreshadowing in A Good Man is Hard to Find

Also, when a person dies and is prepared for burial they are dressed up and made to look their best. In the story, the grandmother has dressed herself up to look her best in case she is to be found dead. Reading the parts of the story that lead up to the trip, allows one to see the very obvious incidences of foreshadowing. .
As the story continues, the family's trip gets underway. Through the grandmother's continual conversation and the change in scenery, clearer examples of what is to come are revealed. As the family heads out, it seems like a normal family vacation. The scenery is bright and the Grandmother even remarks on how nice the day is. As the trip continues, they come upon a 'family' graveyard which seems to have five or six graves in it. Upon reading one will observe that the family consists of only six members. Also, this grave yard is isolated to itself, much like an island. This effectively portrays the family's seclusion on the country roads leading to Florida. Eventually the family stops at a diner called Red Sammy's. While dining there, the Misfit is brought up once again, reminding the reader that the he is overshadowing the entire trip. Another example is seen in the conversation with the diner owner. Red Sammy talks about how evil the world is nowadays, how you cannot trust anyone, and how people used to be able to leave their doors unlocked without worrying about something bad happening. This leads the reader to believe there is nothing safe in the story. The next example of foreshadowing occurs when the family comes to a town called Toombsboro. If one breaks the word up; it says tomb which makes a person think of a tomb stone and boro or bury which implies a grave. The name gives the reader a feeling of darkness and death. As the family comes to this town, the Grandmother recalls an old plantation that she had once visited and would like to visit again. She convinces her son that she knows precisely where it is and convinces him to allow the family to go see it.
