Rehabilitating Victims of Human Trafficking

In 2003, there were approximately 1,400 juveniles arrested for prostitution in the United States. Of that 1,400 arrested, 69% were female and 14% were under the age of 15.2 Women and girls are trafficked in a variety of ways. Some are lured with offers of legal work as shop assistants or waitresses. Others are promised marriage, educational opportunities and a better life. Still others are sold into trafficking by boyfriends, friends, neighbours or even parents. Trafficking victims often are passed among multiple traffickers, moving further away from home. Boys are generally often not targeted as trafficking victims and are frequently overlooked by service providers. However, research has shown that boys are also targeted by sex traffickers and are at risk for commercial sexual exploitation. It is estimated that one in ten males will be victims of sexual exploitation at some point in their childhood.3.
Domestic labour is always present, however it is not often noticed in slavery because most media accounts of human trafficking focus on commercial sexual exploitation. It is estimated that at least 52.6 million men and women work as domestic workers across the world, as well as 7.4 million children below the age of 15. Domestic work accounts for 7.5 per cent of women's wage employment worldwide, and a far greater share in some regions.4 Normally domestic workers are being trafficked into private homes; making is even more difficult to identify the trafficker. Domestic workers often work excessively long hours without breaks, days off or holidays. Those who live with their employers are often considered 'on call' to undertake work for their employer 24 hours per day.5 The pay is often very low, with wage payments frequently delayed. Some domestic workers may not be paid at all or only receive 'payment in kind' such as food or accommodation.  Many domestic workers face verbal abuse such as insults and threats, alongside physical and even sexual abuse.
