After being integrated into the ways of traditional education for decades, the world of education is changing and changing drastically because of the digital revolution. This shift is already causing an uproar and fueling a debate between those who advocate for a traditional education and those who believe change is on the horizon. Look inside any community and you will see children playing complex video games, workers learning new tasks through digital simulations, students taking courses at online colleges and adults consulting Wikipedia for answers on a regular basis. New technology has created learning opportunities that defy traditional learning and the possibilities are endless. There are many arguments both for and against integrating online education into the college curriculum across the country. "Online Education will change how universities teach; as a result, online education will change which universities teach" (Tabarrok, 2012). .
Some people would argue that one of the key aspects of college life is the social interaction you receive by physically going to class and interacting with your fellow peers. These same people claim that online classrooms lack the ability to personalize each student's individual needs and will have a negative effect on both academics as well as social interactions. Despite these arguments for the opposition, our society is transforming because of information and communication technologies, there is little reason to believe that education is not to follow and join the technologies that have already begun this radical transformation. According to Christina Williams, "Transformation of learning environments in higher education settings for an increasingly electronic world is critical to ensure that the benefits are fully realized" (Garrison, & Kanuka, 2004). In a perfect world, universities across the United States would integrate a blended learning style instead of abandoning the ideals of traditional learning altogether and adapting online learning for the basis of learning for future generations in the years to come.
