Wholesale Recall: A Comparison with Common Threads

This mining colony is what really works to convey the idea of the corrupt and financially greedy bureaucratic organization suppressing and exploiting the contrasting innocent and very dependent citizens of mars. These citizens are chasing the new American dream in the film, a promise of a new profitable life of worry free luxury is promised via the ad shown during Quaid's trip around the city. Much to the disappointment of those who made the trip to Mars they are met with poverty and oppression. The reason behind this move to have the film take place on Mars as opposed to Chicago suits two separate agendas. The first and more obvious of the two is that in order for a film to sell the idea of a science fiction title there are certain requirements they must meet to sell the idea to the masses. More importantly this adaptation was made to better exhibit the target of the criticism by placing it in an unfamiliar and unforgiving locale. The short story offers a much more subtle exploitation of the people in Interplan, a more futuristic version of a government agency akin to modern day CIA. Through subterfuge and manipulation they alter Quail's memories to suit their own agendas. The fact that the short story stays on Earth, save for the idea that part of Quail's "mission" took place on Mars, really cements us in the idea that although there are fantastic additions of futuristic technology the world we are viewing is not too different than our own.
Introducing a love interest into the film adaptation was a rather peculiar choice from a interpretive standpoint. At face value the addition of Melina (Rachel Ticotin), later revealed to be a Mars resistance fighter, seems almost incidental. Though I am sure part of her addition was simply to give our hero that go-to motivational element there is something to be said about Quaid's request for an unmistakably different, and some might argue opposite, type of girl to that which he was currently married to.
