Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin

.
In the second subplot, Viserys Targaryen marries his younger sister, Daenerys, to a Dothraki king, whose people, are nomadic horse-mounted warriors; who sweep through the immense central plains of Essos in pursuit of plunder. Viserys gives Daenerys to the king in order to unite their houses; in which it endows him with the ability to command the Dothraki army and take back Westeros. To Viserys surprise, Daenerys fails to be the shy, cowardly queen he thought she would be. In fact, the Dothraki see her as courageous and admirable, and loyally accept her as their Khaleesi (queen). Recognizing her new found power, she has Viserys executed after countless years of abuse, manipulation, and severe threats to her life. After his demise, Daenerys continues her brother's mission of raising an army and taking back her homeland. As you can see, particularly in this storyline, society will betray and deceive to obtain what they're after. .
In the remaining subplot, Jon Snow, an 'illegitimate' son of the Ned Stark, joins the Night's Watch when he nears adult hood. The Night's Watch is a rudimentary 'police force' that criminals pledge their life to, such as thieves, rapists, and murderers. If caught and convicted of a serious crime, one can face a list of severe reprimands, or have the choice of joining the Night's Watch as an alternative. Jon decided to join the Watch because he felt as though he had nothing, and desired to gain honor for his name. Once at the Night's Watch, Jon was appointed as a simple steward, one to cook, clean, and wait on noble lords, despite being the one of the finest swordsman in the Night's Watch. Unhappy, with his humble duties, Jon sought out to find a more authoritative position in the Night's Watch overcoming various problems and difficulties along the way. Even as insignificant as this situation, it still demonstrations my point exactly; people are drawn to power as teenagers are drawn to alcohol.
