Overview of Great Cacapan, West Virginia

The name itself stands for "healing waters" which was given to it by the Native Americans that resided there before. There's a park in the middle of Berkley Springs where a monument named George Washington's bathtub is located. It's a little outdoor bathtub made out of rock in the park that doesn't seem like much from afar. Usually when we went, there would be a crowd of young and excited families surrounding this spot. There aren't many tourists surprisingly, but the people who live there kind of act like one's when they're there, which makes it better in my opinion. River water flows down the mountain and is channeled through the monument. The sounds and scenery are extremely relaxing. The streaming river water combined with sound of splashing water from the pool behind us always kept the park noisy and alive throughout the day. Little kids would usually be running through the river water just outside the bathtub. Parents would be dipping their feet to relax in the same water. My Grandpa used to say that a dip in those waters would always ease your mind, and I found he was right during most of my visits there. George Washington used to bathe there for the same reason between his first visit in 1748 until his last in 1784. At the time he would have been bathing in those waters, however, it would of looked completely unrecognizable to us. The bathtub monument was built later on to try to resemble what the conditions of the time would have been like. .
In the mid 1700's, the place would have probably been busier than it is today. The colonial town was actually a popular destination to those in the upper class. I can imagine looking through a time machine now seeing all those wealthy people dressed in the most expensive fashion of the 17th century. The structure of the town itself wouldn't be the biggest difference but the people today are a lot more country and a lot less formal.
