During his senior year, Mr. McFarland asked where Mike planned on attending college. Mike always assumed he was going to get a full time job after high school as no one in his family went to college and very few completed high school. However, with the help of Mr. McFarland, Mike Rose was able to get accepted into a private college and to receive loan. If Mr. McFarland had not entered Mike Rose's life he probably would have ended up like the rest of his family members whom if they even graduated high school, went on to work instead of pursuing a college education. Rose's accomplishments as a professor and author would be non-existent if McFarland did not influence him in the ways he did.
"Looking for Work" is a story told by Gary Soto about his childhood life and how he wished to live like the families that he watched on television. Soto narrates the story as his nine-year-old self who strives to make his family as perfect as on Leave it to Beaver, a popular television program. Soto decides to become wealthy and wants to earn money so that his family can have expensive things which he thought could lead them to be a perfect family like the ones he watched on television. Soto walked around the neighborhood in search of jobs. He first went to the store for a woman on the street and received a nickel for doing so. Next, he went to Mrs. Moore's house who let him weed a flower bed which earned him a quarter and two peaches from her tree. Gary Soto concludes his story by stating that he ended his day in search of an over-grown flower bed and the dime that would set the day right. (Soto 26). Because of Soto's accomplishment with finding small jobs to work in the neighborhood he continued to search for jobs.
