Celebration of the Chinese New Year

The drive to attract tourist to this celebration however transformed this private and family oriented celebration into a commercial and public gathering.
It is important to understand the origins and transition of the Chinese New Year, as it has served as a bridge to introduce and integrate Americans into the Chinese culture. It is an example of how a celebration has impacted Western views on immigrants. Studying its application could help other cultures integrate their traditions into American minds. The introduction of new cultures could serve as a means to eliminate the stereotypes and prejudges that minorities face in America. My interest in Chinese New Year come from my yearly visits to China town during the celebration. The bright reds and aroma of the cuisine lured me there with friends. I want to how this tradition grew into what it is today, and how it continues to attract tourist from all over the world. I never truly understood the meaning behind the celebration and I thought it was time to find out. I hope to learn more about this beautiful celebration and gain a better perspective of how it was changed over time.
The origin of the Chinese New Year begins with the Chinese calendar which originates from Wan-nien-li. The traditional calendar was based upon the lunar cycles, it was composed of 12 months each with 29-30 days. Each month began with the new moon and had a mid-point at the full moon, in total the year consisted of 344 days (Hu, 1991). While the calendar was accurate it was of little help to the farmers. They required a calendar that depended on the sun, as it would help with the harvest and reaping of crops. Chinese astrologist soon derived a solar calendar, but the lunar calendar was widely used. The two clashed with one another and formed a chaotic time line. A young man by the name of Wan-nien-li set out to consolidate the two calendars. He devised a new calendar relying on the stars.
