The Path of Canadian Independence


Sir Julian Byng and his right hand man Arthur Currieiv carefully planned out the attack which in turn, kept the number of casualties down. The Canadian corps had also captured more ground, more prisoners and more guns than any previous offence. This demonstrated that Canada is one of the outstanding formations on the Western front. The success will lead Canadian troops to even more victory and will be a turning point for the allies. After the war ended, the achievements of the Canadian corps earned us a separate signature on the Treaty of Versailles. France also granted a piece of land to Canada in order memorialize the success of the Canadian troops at Vimy Ridge and many others. The Canadian National Vimy Memorial sits on hill 145, as a tribute for those who served their country and risked their lives throughout the Great War. The memorial is engraved with the names of 11,285 soldiers who were either listed as dead of missing in Francev. In Canada, citizen came together and celebrated the victory and showed a feeling of nationhood. The commander of Vimy Ridge Brigadier-General Alexander Ross who later became president of the Canadian legion said: "It was Canada from the Atlantic to the Pacific on parade. I thought then that in those few minutes I witnessed the birth of a nation."vi .
             Not long after the war had ended, The Statute of Westminster was passed by the British Parliament at Westminster in Great Britain on December 11th, 1931vii. The Statute gave the power to Canada as well as other Commonwealth Dominions such as Australia, New Zealand and etc. The planning of the Statute took a total of 3 years. The Imperial Conference in 1926 began suggesting that Britain and all other Dominions were all part of the Commonwealth Nations and were considered constitutionally equal in statusviii. In the Conference of the Operation of Dominion Legislation of 1929 and the Imperial Conference of 1930, the fundamentals of the Commonwealth's legal system were in a changing progressix.
