Mommie Dearest


(This aspect of Joan's personality was later personified in an episode of "The Lucy Show" on February 26th 1968 .) It becomes clear though the following scenes that Joan wants a baby. Yet she has been unable to get pregnant in the past and her boyfriend, Greg Savitt , tells her the adoption agencies would never give her a baby, he is right. In fact at this time in California single women were not allowed to adopt children. Greg is able to pull some strings and buy her a baby, Christina. In actuality, on June eleventh 1939, shortly after being born at Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital, the child of a student and a sailor is taken to Joan at her Brentwood home and named Joan Crawford Jr. It is not until May of 1940 that Joan takes her adopted daughter to Las Vegas, Nevada and legally adopts her daughter who she renames Christina Crawford. The Newspaper happily reports "Joan Crawford Adopts a baby" on May 25th. .
             In the first few scenes, we see a solid mother/daughter relationship blossoming beautifully before it quickly begins to disintegrate under the weight of Joan's professional life. About this time Christopher, the son Joan adopts , makes his appearance. He maintains a low profile throughout the film. .
             We are shown that nearly any situation can turn ugly under the stern eye of Crawford. Playing in the pool turns into a mother-daughter race in which Crawford wins again and again, forcing her exhausted child to keep racing. Christina pretending to accept an acting award at her mother's dressing table becomes a harsh lesson in grooming, as Joan bellows at the child while brushing out and then cutting off her hair. After a fight with Greg about having to eat with the Mayor while at a restaurant he leaves her, so she cuts his face out of all the pictures. "If she doesn't like you, she can make you disappear." Says Christina to Christopher. .
             Joan often sees herself as the victim, in an early scene, she prepares for an important meeting with Louie B.
