King Louis XIV

He writes of the recapture of the castle of Lucharez, the beseige of chamby, the capture of the castle of goury, and the capture of Santee-Severe. Then during his regn as King, Suger writes of the capture of Tomas of Marteles Castles, the capture of fertr Baudouin, and others. Suger endeavors to prove Louis the Fat a great King throgh his numerous seizures of land. Some would argue that a great King is one who seeks to ensure peace in his kingdom. King Louis administration was not only speckled with one conflict after the other, but he played an active role in these instances of disharmony even before he was king. In addition, when discussing Louis in his youth, Suger cites louis valour and leadership capabilities which superceeded that of his rival, King William Rufus of England, the son of King William the Conquerer. Its apparent that King louis was defending himself against the attacks of the King of England, but Suger's constant embelishments lead one to beleive his descriptionas and accounts were exagerated and extremely biased. the biographer was even bold enough to say King Louis was able to thwart off the military advances of King Willima with etween three hundred and five hundred soldiers versus Englands ten thousand. Suger's embelishments may have been necessary to idolisize a King whos true deeds may not have been worthy of such a book.
Worthy or not, Sugaralso inluded a great deal of information on Kings Louis relationshp with the church and Papal authority.Suger descrbes the King as being a devour supporter and protecter of the christian faith. One can esily observe Sugars belief in the concept of Divine Right because he frequently refers to Louis as the "Lord Designate" before he takes on the Kingship. We find the first interaction between the King and the offcials of the church when Pope Paschal II journeyed to France to gain the support of King Phillip (Louis's Father) and the Lord Designate concerning the recent debates over lay investiture.
