The story of Al Capone became legendary once he made it to Chicago. Upon coming to Chicago, Capone joined the Five Points Gang. This was one of Chicago's most dangerous gangs. Torrio fled the country handing over the entire bootlegging operation to Capone (Al). Chicago voted 6 to 1 to not pass prohibition, but it passed anyway. Al Capone once told reporter Damon Runyan, "I make money by supplying a public demand. If I break the law, my customers . some of the best people in Chicago, are as guilty as me." (Al) Al Capone began to take over competition mostly resorting to violence as his first means for dealing with opposition. Over 200 people's death could be linked back to Al Capone (St.). Some of the most infamous murders take place in early 1929.
In January of 1929 the gang leader Dion O'Banion, an opponent of Capone, was murdered in a flower shop. This act caused a series of gang wars that would all be put to an end on February 14th 1929. (St.) On this day, the gang leader Bugs Moran had his men waiting in a garage for a shipment of liquor they believed they had stolen from Capone. Many people in civilian clothing approached the men. The men believed the people just to be bystanders. At 10:30am a Cadillac, the type of car the Chicago police used at the time, pulled up. Out stepped out 2 undercover police officers.
