Black Elk Speaks (The Circle)

The sun's powerful rays give us heat in the daytime, which is the heat temperature that we as human beings are adapted and accustomed to. It is symbolic of human life and natural wonders working together to keep all species from dying off. Without the sun we, we as human beings could not survive. The sun, which is yellow, represents the eastern part of the circular divide.
"The wind, in its greatest power, whirls."(150) The wind has power to project a lot of things. It can be calm as a breeze on a nice summer afternoon, yet as vicious as a hurricane off the east coast, which moves in a circular direction. The wind gives us circular wonders of life. The tornado is a natural phenomenon of weather, and moves in a circular direction. This starts as high winds in a circular shape, and continues to make a wind swirl shaped like a funnel. Notice all this is circular. The wind helps nature, for example it is how bees can pollinate flowers, or how the pollen is whisked around by the wind to land on other flowers. The wind gives us the balance of a cool summer breeze and the warm rays from the sun. It is like nature's fan on a hot afternoon. The wind is one of the many wonders of life that is circular.
The moon, though not as powerful as the sun, plays a significant role in life. The moon controls the tides of water, like a magnet on a piece of metal. The moon, ever so beautiful on a cleat night, has many phases. These phases of the moon are almost like a time clock in months for the Indian culture. Even though the moon has many phases, these phases keep coming back, like a circle, from full moon to new and back to full. The moon provides guidance in the night sky. The moon reflects night, or dark blue or black, like in the west of the circular divide.
The Native Americans divide the circle into four parts: the north, south, east, and west. Lets start in the east as the sun is rising. The east has a significant color of red, and depending on the tribe it maybe yellow for the sun rising.
