So as we can see, Chillingworth's fatal flaw was his need for revenge and this eventually lead to his sins of anger and envy.
Chillingworth's revenge had an extremely important impact on his life and actions. It seemed his entire life became consumed with the idea of getting revenge on Dimmesdale. The first affect that was brought upon him was how the town viewed him. "As his studies, at a previous period of his life, had made him extensively acquainted with the medical science of the day, it was as a physician that he presented himself, and as such was cordially received."" (122). It goes on to say how he was celebrated by the town and looked highly upon. However, his obsession for revenge has changed the way the town perceived him. .
A large number, and many of these were persons of such sober sense and practical observation, that their opinions would have been valuable in other matters-affirmed that Roger Chillingworth's aspect had undergone a remarkable change while he dwelt in town, and especially since he abode with Mr. Dimmesdale. (131).
However, this is not where it ends, the town not only notices undesirable differences but also, continue by saying they believe he is Satan. Furthermore, his physical appearance started to actually show what was happening to him on the inside. "At first his expression had been calm, meditative, scholar like. Now, there was something evil and ugly in his face, which they had not previously noticed, and which grew the more obvious to sight the oftener they looked upon him."" (131). His physical features became more grotesque; the more he became consumed by revenge. This leads me to my next point; another affect on Chillingworth's life was how revenge completely consumed him. "This purpose, once effected, new interests would immediately spring up, and likewise a new purpose; dark, it is true, if not guilty, but of force enough to engage the full strength of his faculties.
