Britain and the First Industrial Revolution

People relied on the local community to produce food however the amount produced were limited and costly. On the other hand those who were categorized in the upper class were fortunate enough to benefit from imported goods that were in areas such as London and Bristol. At this point life was a constant battle against famine and bad luck. 1Although T. S. Ashton put forth a positive view, believing that industrialization turned around these harsh conditions. By the 18th century the feudal system was no longer in play. Despite the fact that many were struggling within Britain due to the lack of resources they still stood well. Geographically they were at advantage, as they were close to sea making it their main source of cheap economic transportation of materials such as iron. At this time the island covered one quarter of the world's land mass. A pivotal point that prompted the beginning of the Industrial Revolution was the Enlightenment/ Scientific period. It leads the British to start incorporating science and reasoning into their world view. It also encouraged craftspeople and academics to apply knowledge, thinking to new ideas that focused more on technology and mechanisms rather than old fashion manual labour. Historian 2 Arnold Toynbee contended that the intellectual modifications transformed the English culture especially mechanical innovations and economic stability. .
             An essential role was the alteration of the traditional agricultural system. It was on the rise in the 18th century, which aided to rapid growth in agricultural efficiency and innovation of farm tools, which changed farming forever. The food production started to accelerate, which allowed the rising population to be fed and created extra labour to full the industrial needs in the cities. It also resulted in in improved health and facilitated the economy allowing British workers to save money. A major element to the agriculture revolution was the enclosure movement.
