194). Derek exhibits a variety of deviant behaviors. Derek is extremely racist. Derek plays a game 3 on 3 games of basketball against three black men. Derek states that if they win then the basketball courts were theirs. Later the night Derek is eating dinner with his mother, brother, and his mom's new boyfriend Murray. Derek exhibits deviance when he has a full blown out conversation about Rodney King with Murray. Derek gets so heated that he threatens Murray and shows him his swastika tattoo. Danny, who is Derek's younger brother, looks up to Derek. Danny is very impressionable and he has a sponge like interest in everything his brother does. The boys are raised in Venice Beach which was prominently a white community. More and more Hispanics and blacks moved into the area. With all the minorities moving in it begins a fertile ground for increasing anger for insecure ethnocentric white males. According to Henslin (2010) Ethnocentrism is "a tendency to use our own group's ways of doing things as a yardstick for judging others" (p.36). An extreme ethnocentric view is seen in nearly every character in the movie. Ethnocentrism can also be seen as Derek's anger and confusion grow his place in society is questioned. Derek thinks he is above all blacks and illegal immigrants. He is upset because he feels like the government is just ignoring the problem. While speaking to a crowd of whites, Derek explains, "Don't just be some punk, and be part of something." The crown agrees with Derek and they accept the invitation. They soon find comfort and meaning in their new social identity. Derek can be seen as an authoritarian leader. Henslin states that an authoritarian leader is "one who gives orders" (p.163) Derek gives orders to his gang to rob a Mexican owned grocery store. The gang viciously terrorizes the employees in the store. They make racist slurs while pouring tequila and salsa into the employee's throats.
