Religion and Coming Out of the Closet

Each day in America millions of lesbians and gays decide to come out of the closet, and plea for the same rights as their heterosexual counter parts. Currently in America there is an ongoing debate on whether gay and lesbian couples ought to receive the same legal rights and benefits as heterosexual married couples. This particular debate has been a debated topic for decades; however no real solution has been reached. Given the importance of this subject it has been one of the leading topics in recent debates and elections. There are many individuals that support legalizing same sex rights; however there are many on the other side of the spectrum. Aside from societal and religious conventions, in my opinion same sex couples should have the same benefits as heterosexual couples whether it's through the legalization of marriage, or allowing them to have the same benefits as heterosexual couples. .
On March 26, 2015 Governor Mike Pence signed a very controversial Religious Freedom Restoration Act. The governor said in a statement "I support the freedom of religion for the every Hooiser of every faith." (Margolin,2015) The governor stated that "The Constitution of the United States and the Indiana Constitution both provide strong recognition of the freedom of religion but today, many people of faith feel their religious liberty is under attack by government action." (McCormack,2015) The Religious Freedom Restoration Act, basically states that if a lesbian or gay couple enters into an establishment and if the owner of said establishment do not want to want to server them they can state that it's due to the fact of their religious beliefs. These business owners will be protected under the new law. This is a form of discrimination; however this action is legal(Margolin 2015). This is considered representative democracy. Representative democracy is a political system in which decisions affecting a community are taken, not by its members as a whole, but by individuals who they have elected for this purpose (Milakovich & Gordon, 2013).
