             Abortion is a common option for women who are: underage and cannot deal with the accountability of caring for a child, single parents, unmarried women or victims of sexual assault. Abortion is a central ethical issue as individuals have differing opinions about it. The main decision lies in the hand of the mother as she has to make an informed choice based on the development of her conscience and morality whether to end the life of her child or not, her decision may be influenced by her surroundings such as her partner, parents and society. People's attitudes towards abortion are formed based on many things but it is especially influenced on how they were raised and their religion. Many people believe that abortion is wrong, as life is sacred whereas others may believe that it is your body and therefore you have the power to choose what is right. Abortion is legal in many countries; in NZ it is legal under certain conditions, which will preserve the health of the person. Abortion has always been a debatable issue in New Zealand, in 1977 The Contraception, Sterilization and Abortion Act was passed however it is still a contemporary ethical issue as the 'Right to Life' launched a court case against the 'Abortion Supervisory Committee' which carried on from 2005-2011. Thus meaning that abortion is an constant issue in New Zealand.
             The Catholic Church believes that abortion is wrong for many reasons. One of the reasons is because abortion goes against the will of God. An important Catholic Social Teaching is the respect for human life.
