Employee Ethics and Conduct

Ethics can be defined as a set of acceptable actions that is acceptable by a group or an individual. As such, doing contrary to this amounts to resentment and sometimes punishment. Social responsibility is also dictated by ethics. Organizations are expected to adhere to business ethics while their employees are subject to individual ethics. The two case studies provided in the Shades of Gray provide an insight into several complex issues of both social responsibility and personal ethics that have emerged in the hospitality industry[ CITATION Tim95 l 1033 ].
To begin with, social responsibility has been lacking in the hospitality industry since investors are pursuing profits while ignoring the ethical issues that arise from their move. For instance, when an investor decides to put up a resort in an area despite widespread resistance from the local community and other lobby groups such as environmentalists amounts to lack of adherence to social responsibility on the part of the investor. Should an investor put up a resort on an area, then the local community should be the first to benefit from such a move. However, this has not been the case in the recent past. This is because investors are going ahead to import the manpower instead of hiring people from the local community. Besides, those in the hospitality industry have failed to evaluate the environmental impact that their constructions would have on the locality. This can be termed as greed where hoteliers are putting profits above everything else in their operations[ CITATION Tim95 l 1033 ]. Local leaders have also aided wealthy businessmen in oppressing local communities by asking for bribes in order to give them a go ahead to construct resorts without involving the local communities. Corruption is a vise, not a virtue. On the other hand, businessmen are also lobbying for support from the local governments to allow them construct hotels and after they get the permission to do so they fail to honor their promise of being socially responsible[ CITATION Tim95 l 1033 ].
