Overview of Teens and Depression


Someone with depression will also experience some, if not all, of the following: crying spells, or crying without a reason, poor concentration, headaches, unnecessary guilt, and/or self-injury, such as cutting to ease their emotional pain. How one person acts may be very different than how another person acts.              Anxiety may also come with depression, if it does not trigger the depression. The two illnesses are very common, and many experience one with, or right after the other. Meaning someone with anxiety may get depressed after their anxiety attack. The percentage of those who suffer from both, anxiety and depression is 80%. With this, depression is most likely to happen, or begin, around the same time as one hits puberty (Lang Ch. 2-11). .
             Depression in teenagers is very similar to the type of depression adults have. Females are more likely to get depression, and seek help, than males. This is because girls are taught to talk about their feelings, while boys are supposed to be tough and strong. Over the past 50 years, depression has been found in younger and younger ages. About 5% of children will suffer at one point in their childhood. As the depression rates rise in teenagers, so does the number of suicides (Teenage Depression). .
             In the book, The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky, the main character, Charlie, had subconsciously suffered from depression. When Charlie met his best friends, Sam and Patrick, it was more obvious that he was depressed. He became antsy and nervous for everything, the anxiety part. He cried over everything and nothing, the crying spells. He didn't become an addict, but he started some pretty awful drugs, that could have killed him. He had many bad trips on LSD, a hallucinogen, and ended up in the hospital a couple of times.
