Common Core Education System

The way to 'fix' this problem is to establish high standards that control what is taught by testing students on the standards. Testing assures that these standards are taught. (Stephen Krashen, pg 37). However the issue is not that America has a bad education system, instead it is due to a large population of poverty. In 2013, when the effects of poverty were controlled, American students ranked near the top of the world. (qtd. in Carnoy and Rothstein 2013). On the other hand, while we compare American scores in a 23 percent or more poverty rate to Finland, a country that has had consistently higher scores, that has a 5 percent poverty rate; our scores turn out to be lower. (qtd. UNICEF 2012).
If Common Core is adopted further and implemented as the official education system of America, then it will cause segregation of the education for students of poverty background. This is because they would not be able to afford the high standards held by Common Core. Such standards include mandatory parent involvement, which many would fail at completing considering that their parents work to provide money for their financial necessity. .
Segregation was called to an end in 1954 with the Supreme Court case rule of Brown V. Board of Education. This court case ruled that 'it is illegal to distinguish among racial groups for purposes of institutional discrimination in public schools.' (Gordon Allport, pg 44). Yes, this case ruled no segregation due to race; however it can be applied to social class. This is because; racial class is identified with social class. Those that are of lower-income tend to be immigrants of Hispanic, Native American, African, Asian, Arabian background. .
An example of the relation of social class with race is seen in the film Bride and Prejudice. In the film, Lalita is one of the four daughters from the Bakshi family. In India, the Bakshi's are relatively wealthy, however when compared to American wealth standards she is associated as poor due to her Indian background.
