And if you wrong, shall we not revenge? If we are like you in the rest, we will resemble you in that. If a Jew wrong a Christian, what is humility? Revenge Christian wrong a Jew, what should his sufferance be. revengeThe villainy you teach me I will execute-and it shall go hard but better I will better the instruction."(3.1.52-73).
With these words Shylock demonstrates how Christians and Jews are the same. He wants to prove his point that he is equal with the rest of them, not any better nor worse. .
Yet, Shylock hides his devilish side as a greedy and revengeful moneylender.Shylock charges high interest rates unlike the other moneylenders, and when he is not repaid he demands revenge. For instance, Shylock demands Antonio's pound of flesh rather than double the amount of ducats he is offered. From the beginning of the play, Antonio goes to Shylock to borrow three thousand ducats under one condition, which is if Antonio does not repay Shylock, Shylock has the right to take remove a pound of Antonio's flesh. Later, Antonio's ships do not come back and he is unable to repay Shylock. From this point, Shylock finds an opportunity to get revenge for the oppression he has experienced over the years by the people of Venice. So, Shylock interpret the bond between Antonio and him literally instead of what it was originally suppose to be, as a joke. At this point of the play, Shylock takes Antonio to court to get his pound of flesh. .
When Antonio is in court, Shylock shows no mercy and insists his pound of flesh. Shylock repeats this phrase over and over again, "I will have my bond." This quote shows that nothing can change his mind about taking Antonio's flesh. Also, Shylock is not fit to be a father because when Solonio, tells Salarino, about Jessica, and how Shylock, her father, screams in the streets saying, "My daughter! O my ducats! O my daughter! Fled with a Christian! O my Christian ducats!"(2.
