Comparative Paper - Plato and Hobbes

The general state would be conditioned to concede to the ways of the guardians so that everyone would benefit within society and live peacefully. .
Plato's idea of having the guardians as the chosen ones to oversee the state in "The Republic" is because they are the ones filled with wisdom and the possessors of all truths. Within his theory, if the guardians did not exist then normal human beings in the state would not know how they should act within society, therefore leading them to fall prey to their own desires and selfish ways. His belief is that everyone wants to live morally and do what is best even if scarcity was an issue; therefore, because they want to live in accordance to what is best, endeavoring to the higher calling and wisdom of the guardians would lead them to what is right and just. Hobbes view on human's natural condition written in the "The Leviathan," was that human beings start out in a state of war; therefore to live peacefully where one does not take more then another when it comes to the basic essentials necessary to survive in life, a government must rule to prevent the overturn in the event of scarcity. A few reasons why he believed this to be true is that he thought humans are born selfish and this is their natural condition and to think that they are in this world for themselves and no one else. Hobbes states, "Whatsoever therefore is consequent to a time of war, where every man is enemy to every man, the same consequent to the time wherein men live without other security than what their own strength and their own invention shall furnish them withal" (Leviathan). What Hobbes is saying is, human beings are put on this earth to look out for themselves; and if scarcity were to occur, they would look the other way if someone else needed help. .
Hobbes uses three principles as to what drives humans to be so hurtful and negative in society because of their human nature: Competition, Diffidence and Glory (Leviathan).
