The Three Deadly Sins of Rufus Weylin

"We believe no evil till it is done" is a common quote meaning that evil only arises in characters that display it through their actions. The novel Kindred written by Octavia E Butler proves this quote accurate of Rufus Weylin where he displayed traits of evil that include unsympathetic feelings, enforcing slavery and selfishness. Rufus Weylin is definitely an evil man and is clearly displayed through his actions and words to every other character in the novel. .
Rufus Weylin is clearly an evil man due to his lack of sympathy towards many characters in the novel. Rufus Weylin showed lack of sympathy towards Dana where he lied about sending letters to her fiance Kevin. "after he learned you didn't send my letters?"(Butler, 179) is a quote said by Dana when she learned Rufus Weylin lied to her about sending the letters to Kevin. This is clearly not an act of sympathy because he did not want Kevin to take Dana north, and wanted to Dana to stay with him. Another reason why Rufus Weylin is not sympathetic is when he sent his two kids to his Aunt's house while telling Alice he sold them away as slaves. ""Where are the children Rufe?" (Butler 251) In Baltimore with my mothers sister". This is the most uncaring act in the entire novel because he took away Alice's children and "sold" them away to have her from leaving, resulting in her suicide. Without a doubt, Rufus is an evil character who is without a doubt an uncaring human being. .
Rufus Weylin is an evil man because he supports slavery and abuses people both physically because he "owns" them. The first instance where he abused someone physically was when he beat her senseless. "One morning after he had overdone it, Alice came downstairs with her whole face swollen and bruised" (Butler 169). In this case, Alice did not want to be with Rufus Weylin and was beaten up because of that.
