Colbie Caillat and Gypsy Heart

American pop artist and Grammy Award winner, Colbie Caillat released her fifth album "Gypsy Heart". On that album, Colbie Caillat brings to life her song called "Try". The combined powerful lyrics and accompanying video is both an inspirational and rhetorical piece that clearly sends the message to women, both young and old, that you can feel beautiful and be beautiful by just being you. Her inspiration for the song was her own experience and the impact that photo shopping has had on her life. .
Caillat's smooth voice and uplifting tone conveys the message of self-love, aimed specifically at women. Caillat begins her song by saying "put your make up on, get your nails done, curl your hair, run the extra mile, keep it slim, so they like you, do they like you"? (Try, Colbie Caillat) She continues to say, " you don't have to try so hard, and you don't have to give it all way. You just have to get up, get up and you don't have to change a single thing. " (Try, Colbie Calliat). In these words, she is ostracizing the idea that in order to be beautiful, you need to be made up. This is a powerful message for all women, both young and old. In her accompanying video to this song, it goes back and fourth showing different types women made up and not made up. The video, accompanied by the lyrics, show Colbie Caillat along with other women stripping back pieces of their makeup until they are not made up anymore. .
Both the lyrics and video carries a strong appeal as our society puts so much pressure on women, both young and old; to be someone beautiful on the outside, which may not be who, they really are on the inside. In the world of photo shopping and Hollywood, there is even more pressure on women to be beautiful. Caillat's message is conveyed in her words "Do they like you" (Try, Colbie Caillet). She says this in the lyrics, after she talks about women putting their makeup and getting all bedazzled up.
