The Billion Dollar Music Industry

There was a plethora of equipment in there. They had mixing boards, infinite amount of software, Analog and digital out board gear, a microphone collection that consisted of over 700 varying types that all added up to well over $100,000. In Studio A there were 3 producers hunched over the mixing board. They were looping the same twenty second chunk of a song and had been doing so for a good hour before I walked in. I asked them what they were listening for and one of them said, "We are trying to fix some conflicting frequencies between the bass and kick drum." Now having been to a studio session before I knew that the studio is no place for the faint at heart. The hours suck, you rarely see sunlight, you have to be able to handle repetition that would have someone with ADD explode, and you are put under immense pressure to pull through with a polished song in an average window of two weeks. Little did I know that this song was going to be Luke Bryant's latest single. Twenty minutes later Luke him self walked in said hello and went straight into the booth. He laid down three versus and was out of there in less than two hours. The artist/singer is only apart of about of the song creation process the rest is done by the producers and engineers. These guys are machines. When you think of an audio engineer you probably would think of the most normal of people. Well you be wrong. These guys aren't socially awkward band geeks. They are outgoing, sociable, and look sharp. This is when business side starts to show.
Just like a pharmaceutical salesmen the music industry wants to put their best foot forward. They are here to make money. Peace loving hippies wont move money. Just like Wall Street the smart prevail and find ways to stay a step ahead of the competition. There is so much research that goes into the market place and pop culture to see what new song will profit the most. There is a reason that the Top 40 is overrun with major labels.
