Metropolis and Pop Culture

For example, in the film Frankenstein there is an unmistakable resemblance. Dr. Frankenstein's lab, in terms of equipment, looks almost identical to that of Rotwang. Furthermore, much like Rotwang, Victor Frankenstein attempts to play God by creating life. Just as Rotwang created False Maria, Dr. Frankenstein created his monster, and just as False Maria was bad, so was the monster (or at least he was viewed that way). Ultimately both men, and their creations are defeated and destroyed in similar fashion. False Maria was sent to be burned at the stake, while Frankenstein's monster was set ablaze in an old wooden windmill. .
Victor Frankenstein was not the only character to have had inherited Rotwang's god complex. Another famous film that was very heavily influenced by Metropolis is Blade Runner. Released in 1982, Blade Runner is highly regarded as a sci-fi classic. The major connections between this film and Metropolis lie in the fact that they are both set in futuristic dystopias and the significance of robots. So, as mentioned above, we again see this god complex come into play. Dr. Eldon Tyrell is the head of the Tyrell Corporation and creator of the replicants. We can see that he is very proud of his work as he not only stands by but also supports his creations. Again, though, the master cannot control his creations and they turn bad. This paralells Rotwang's Creation of False Maria (and also the work done by Victor Frankenstein). In addition, the replicants of Blade Runner mimic False Maria immensely. The influence is unmistakable. For starters, False Maria was originally a mechanical robot. Besides the uncanny resemblance of a human figure, she did not actually look like a living being. Then, once fully built, she is transformed into a human. Despite visually looking like Maria, the imposter embodies evil and causes upheaval under the disguise of an exotic dancer. It is in this way that we can see that does in fact have both human and robot characteristics.
