The two works I have studied are "Persepolis" by Marjane Satrapi and "De Niro's Game" by Rawi Hage. Both of these novels have been written by authors who have been through war. Marjane in Persepolis was brought of throughout the war, and Bassam in De Niro's game had been introduced to war at n older age. They describe their experiences through the war their thoughts and allow us as readers to see their character develop and change throughout the novel. They brought their experience through to the reader by using many writing strategies, but a main approach that was taken to present abstract ideas was the use of symbolism. Both works had this in common; the writers had included strong symbolism in order to support the main themes of the books.
In Persepolis, the veil is used to show different symbols throughout the novel, the main two is rebelliousness and repression. By the law being forced upon the people, Marjane being included it becomes a representation of the obedience to the law of Islam. Were people had no choice but to follow the law, that way the veil straight away turned into an object that people used to express their opinion, their defiance. An example of this is at the beginning when people were either with or against the veil, they showed their opposition to the religion by letting out a few strands of their hair. This has also got to do with the people in the Iranian society not know why they were wearing them. They took the risk and through out the novel we see that the veil is used as a medium to rebel and without it Marjane would not have been able to rebel. This is because Marjane would not be able to leave the house without the veil without being caught straight away as it is the first thing that would be noticed and she would be taken away immediately.
