Uda Dan Dara 2015 is a modern musical theatre which held on 5th of April 2015 at Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre. Uda Dan Dara was written by Usman Awang. This time, Uda Dan Dara 2015 was directed by Dato Faridah Merican. She played the role Dara and Uda's mother in the past. This play is produced by The Actors Studio Seni Teater Rakyat. Mark Lim, played the role Uda while Hana Nadira, played the role Dara which both of them were the main characters of this play.
Uda Dan Dara was retelling one of the classic Malaysian story of two young people which different race fall in love with each others. Uda, the young man who is a Chinese man which his family are still in debt fall in love with Dara, the young woman who is a Malay woman who come from a rich family. Both of them fall in love with each others but due to their big differences of wealth, class,culture and ethnicity, they face a lot of obstruction from their family to complete their marriage. This play was convincing because I can clearly understand and follow the story flow. The best part of the story was when Uda express his love towards Dara by using the variety of Malaysian food such as ' you are my lemak in my nasi'. This part was very creative and its makes me laugh. The characteristics of the main characters were not clearly played by the main characters. They should have more expression and get more deeply into the circumstance of the main characters in the story. The production is trying to give out a message which in Malaysia society, there are still many people cant accept marriage among different races. The couples may face a lot of problems from their family, friends and society.
The setting of the scene was too simple and small. They should find a bigger space so that they could dance and sing more lively and randomly while performing. They should adjust their settling on the performing space. The actors does not take good use of the space to do their performing.
