Abortion has been and still remains one of the most debated controversial issues. Both, the pro-life and pro-choice group, have powerful and challenging arguments for and against abortion, which gives us reason to believe that not only one side or argument is correct. The issue is one that questions a person's morality and ethics. The pro-choice group emphasizes that one should have the right to choose whether or not she would like to bring the fetus to term. It is solely her responsibility to decide whether or not she would like or not like to be a mother. People who believe in this idea believe that a woman has the right to control her own body. On the contrary, pro-life believers emphasize the argument of preserving human life since conception at any cost. They believe that once conceived, absolute priority is and should be given to the fetus over the mother. Destroying a human being is considered a murder and is unethical.
The way one perceives the fetus has great impact on whether or not you believe abortion is morally acceptable. The philosophical views of this issue are generally broken into three distinct groups: liberal, conservative, and moderate. The liberal position argues that even though a fetus has the potential to become a "human being", it does not sufficiently resemble a person to have the right to life. It does not override the power of the mother to make the decision to abort her unborn fetus. They believe a fetus does not hold a moral status until or after birth. Liberalists believe that since the fetus does not resemble an actual person until later in birth or until after birth, its rights are in the hands of its creator, the mother. They also believe that the woman or mother has the right to decide what happens with her body (Quinn. 24).
The view that contradicts the liberal view is the Conservative view. The conservative argument states that from the time of conception, the fetus has absolute moral status and has the right to live.
