Alexander Pushkin and Russian Literature

Pushkin was named his successor and began to make a lasting impact on Russia literature at this point. By the time he was sixteen he was given the honor of composing a poem for the wedding of the Grand Duchess Anna Pavlovna who was the sister of the Tsar. By the age of twenty one Pushkin was the literary idol of the city. His poems of liberty and equality were well known throughout the land, but it came at a cost (Massie 206). His provocative writings were more than the authorities at the time could handle. They feared his writing was so powerful that it could endanger the regime in which they had established. They didn't want the citizens of their land getting any radical ideas so they sent him far away in the south on government assignments. After spending time there Pushkin was dismissed from his services in disgrace and banished to his families estate of Mikhailovskoe (Massie 207). It was here that Alexander began to revolutionize Russian literature forever.
While he was there he would seclude himself to a small room and write. He began reading Russian history books and his old nurse from his childhood would tell him old Russian fairy tales. This knowledge of Russian culture inspired Pushkin to write some of his best works ever. The history soon became the theme for many of his works and it was called by his country men "an encyclopedia of Russian life." (Massie 207) This writing style began to make Russian literature readable. During this time a majority of people in Europe solely read and studied works from European countries such as France. They were not interested in the boring text that was written about Russia. They were trying to imitate the French culture instead of embracing the one that they already had. Pushkin changed all that with his wit and peculiarly Russian realism (Massie 207). He developed not only new content, but also a new literary style and modernizing the Russian language.
