In today's world, education can take someone a long way. According to a study done at the University of Hawaii, a person with an associate's degree makes $400k more in their lifetime than a person with a high school diploma would. This is just the income gap between two of the lowest education certificates and it is enough to make people go back to school just to enhance their chances at being promoted or possibly even finding a better paying job. Some of these people going back to school have not had an instructor for years, in some cases even decades! As a result, this means that they are going to need all the help they can get and it all starts with their professors. Unfortunately, for students struggling, the help is not always there for them even though it should be. The reason for this is that sometimes they do not get the luck of the draw and are stuck with overworked or moody professors who often discourage students and make them unmotivated to learn. This is why it is crucial for instructors to care deeply for what they are doing because having a phenomenal teacher who will make sure that the students are getting the most out of their education is key in determining whether the student is learning or not.
There are many students across America who are not learning to their full potential because they have yet to have an opportunity to receive an education from a spectacular instructor. In the case of the less fortunate students, what they get are the instructors who are bored with their jobs and simply teach just because it is the only thing they "know" how to do. The problem that arises with bored teachers is that they pass their boredom down to their students which is the reason why these students find school as a hassle. In John Taylor Gatto's article, "Against School", he asked his students why they were always so bored and their response was that, "teachers didn't seem to know much about their subjects and clearly weren't interested in learning more" (142).
