Facing the Disability of Down Syndrome

It is an unknown reason why a child would be born with the syndrome but there has been a high risk if the mother is older, the greater the risk for a child to be born with it" ("Down Syndrome") There is no way to prevent a child from having the syndrome even though scientists are uncertain how it's occurring during pregnancy. The mother and father could be perfectly healthy but yet still have a baby born with the syndrome. Although the child is Down syndrome, they could live a perfectly normal life with certain treatments and live for a good amount of time.
Down syndrome was first discovered by John Langdon Down who was physician in the 1856. Dr. Down would receive patients with the syndrome and started calling those patients "mongoloids." "He called them mongoloids since he believed that people with Down syndrome had suffered from arrested ethnic development" ("John Langdon Down"). While Dr. Down started studying the syndrome, he and his wife started growing a compassion for those with Down syndrome. They both saw a positive and bright side of those dealing with the syndrome. The Downs had decided to open an asylum for the Down syndrome but it was private. Although Mr. and Mrs. Down had such a compassion with Down syndrome, many were not as sympathetic over it. .
Over the time, not many understood about any disability. People had many misunderstandings towards it causing judgments. Down syndrome was looked as a crime and seemed as it was not right. It had been unfair for those because people who had Down syndrome had no fault for them having the syndrome. Throughout history, the ones dealing with physical and mental disabilities have been subjected to this cruelty. Those with the disability have been looked down on. They were bullied and made fun of for looking a certain way. "When Hitler was still alive, in the Nazi Germany, the disability were killed no matter what in order to promote the "perfect race" Hitler was promoting" ("A Teacher's Guide).
