Many people are either strongly against it or for it. Ernest Hemingway's "Hills Like White Elephants" and David Foster Wallace's "Good People" are two very similar stories where they show two different young couples who are dealing with an unplanned pregnancy in completely different ways. However, even with the differences there are a couple of similarities between the two couples who are struggling with their decision on whether to keep or abort a child. In both of the situation, the female character is having a mental conflict debating whether to keep or abort the child, while the male character tries to convince them to have the abortion. In both Ernest Hemingway's "Hills Like White Elephants" and David Foster Wallace's "Good People", there are many differences and similarities between the narratives, both of the couples have the same problem but their reactions and solutions are completely different in one story the female character decides to keep the child because an abortion is a sin, whereas in the other story the female character decides to have an abortion to preserve the couples "love". .
"Hills Like White Elephant" by Ernest Hemingway is about an American man and a women named Jig, who are inside of a bar at a train station in Spain as they wait for the train that will take them to Barcelona. While waiting inside of the bar, as Jig is staring outside of the window staring at the hills, she tells the American man that the hills remind her of "white elephants." This is the beginning of their argument. The "white elephants" represent the "elephant in the room - the pregnancy and their unstable relationship. The American man subtle tries to convince Jig that he wants her to have the abortion, but that it's ultimately her "choice". Jig want to know if by having the abortion, it will solve their problems, and get their relationship back to normal.
