The Holy Spirit in the book of Acts would have never come if it had not been for Jesus Christ returning to heaven and sending the Holy Spirit back for all born-again believers. When Jesus was alive, he called twelve disciples. They were ordinary men, with ordinary lives and with ordinary occupations. Some were fisherman, tax collectors, and some were even disciples of John the Baptist. [8] They did not possess any special spiritual or ministerial abilities, but they were called by Jesus Christ to be follow him. [9] Jesus was tasked with the responsibility to take twelve untrained men and make disciples out of them, and that is what he did. The twelve disciples followed Jesus for almost three years, or until he was taken up into heaven as they stood watching at Olivet. [10] Jesus used the three years as a time of preparation for the disciples. He wanted them prepared for their assignment of carrying out the Great Commission, but he also knew they would need the Holy Ghost to live a Holy life. Jesus knew this assignment could not be fulfilled through fleshly abilities, or intellect. This is why he told the disciples "ye shall receive power." [11] The power he was referring to was the Holy Spirit. Jesus knew the Holy Spirit was the empowering presence of God for born again believers. [12] .
