When Schools Extinguish Creativity

I believe Sir Ken Robinson makes an excellent point. I have seen on multiple occasions many highly intelligent people are put down because the education system simply doesn't favor their talents. Hundreds of years ago, subjects of academia such as mathematics, science, and language were set aside for only the elite to study. The arts was an excellent place for the common man to thrive. Being an artist was once something that held a high amount of esteem and pride. .
If we continue on this path of emphasizing mental skills, our culture will be lost to formulas and equations. But more importantly, knowledge will no longer hold any value. What's the point of knowing that the mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell if it doesn't mean anything special to hold that information. Especially because that information is just plain arbitrary for some kids and their chosen career paths. It's essential to keep our youth actively engaged in order to let them discover their own passions, pleasures, and allow them to choose their own learning style. Kids need to be able to move around and explore the capacities of their own minds. For example, I used to be the type of kid who would sit around all day and just read books. I loved reading and I still do, but when I reflect upon that period of my life, I realize that there was so much that I missed. My mind wouldn't wrap around a lot of information about the world around me. I became so engrossed in a book I hardly understood that I couldn't handle the pressures and experiences of daily life. I still enjoy reading but in moderation. Nowadays, I find myself exercising throughout the day, and oftentimes it's not even a workout at a gym, it's just walking around my own home and stretching and such. But with this basic movement throughout my day, I find myself multitasking, being thoroughly engrossed in my hobbies but still succeeding in my daily work. Moving often really does help me focus and get my work done.
